FECAL
EXAM
We recommend a yearly stool check on all dogs and cats to ensure your pet is not harboring any intestinal parasites. Puppies and kittens are routinely dewormed
without them. A fecal should be submitted on all animals experiencing
loose stools or weight loss. Please call 662-434-2281 the times stool
samples can be brought to the clinic.
HEALTH
CERTIFICATES
Health certificates are available for interstate and overseas travel. Health certificates are required for all animals shipped by government or commercial transportation. Certificates are valid for ten (10) days only. Therefore, appointments for health examination should not be requested until the definite date of the animal's shipment is known. The animal must be examined during the ten (10) days prior to its shipment. Contact the VTF at least 45 days prior to shipment to foreign countries for vaccination/entry requirements. If possible, call for health certificate appointments two weeks in advance of an anticipated move.
PCS
MOVE
Do not forget to pick up your pet's record to take to your new duty station. If you should no longer own the pet, please notify the VTF so your records can be destroyed. Remember to call for a health certificate appointment.
HEARTWORM
TEST
Heartworms live in the hearts and lungs of dogs and are spread by mosquitoes. Heartworm preventative medication is only available from veterinarians and can be obtained at the VTF. Since Columbus AFB has mild winter conditions, we recommend dogs stay on the preventative year-round. Dogs testing negative should be place on heartworm preventative. Only dogs under six months of age can be started without first being tested; older dogs must be tested before being placed
on preventative.
Yearly heartworm checks are strongly suggested, and are in the best interest of your pet. Heartworms can be fatal and some dogs have tested positive even while being administered preventative. Dogs infested with heartworms will usually not show signs until late in the disease. The preventative is dosed on your dog's current weight, and must be given as directed to be effective.
CLINIC
APPOINTMENTS
Animals are seen by appointment ONLY. Appointments may be made by calling 434-2281 during operating hours, or by stopping by the VTF. Services desired should be indicated when the appointment is made. Health care can only be provided to animals that are not being maintained for profit sales or any other commercial purpose. Appointments for vaccinations and sick calls are available only when the veterinarian is present. Please call for the next available clinic day.
